WAESI Water Scholars Program
Real Research. Real Mentorship. Real Impact.
The WAESI Water Scholars Program is a yearlong (two-semester) research and mentorship experience for high school and undergraduate students passionate about water, ecology, and community science.
Water Scholars gain authentic field and analytical experience by studying local lakes, rivers, and wetlands alongside scientists, mentors, and environmental professionals. Through guided fieldwork, data analysis, and project development, participants learn how to ask meaningful scientific questions, collect and interpret data, and communicate their discoveries to both scientific and public audiences.
Each cohort conducts original research and presents their findings at a regional conference or scientific meeting, contributing to ongoing conversations about freshwater ecosystems and environmental stewardship.
Limited positions are available, and some funding opportunities may be offered to support field or research expenses.
Enrollment & Scholarship Application
General Application
To apply, email luke@waesi.org with the subject line “Water Scholar Application.” Please include:
-
A cover letter outlining your interest in the program
-
A current CV or résumé
-
(Optional) A letter of recommendation from a teacher or community member
If you wish to be considered for scholarship funding, note this clearly in your email and cover letter. Due to limited funding, financial aid awards are competitive and based on demonstrated interest in environmental science. Applicants not requesting financial aid may have a higher likelihood of acceptance based on available space and resources.
Enrollment
The program cost is $750 per semester. However, need-based and merit-based scholarships are available and may cover part or all of the program fee. Applicants are encouraged to apply for a scholarship during the application process.
No applicant will be denied consideration based on their ability to pay. Scholarship funds are limited and awarded at the discretion of the Board based on demonstrated need, merit, and program goals.
Selection
Applicants are selected based on the quality of their application materials, interview performance, and demonstrated interest in aquatic environmental science.
While selection decisions are made at the discretion of the Board, preference may be given to applicants who show strong ties to local water resources, community engagement, or an intention to pursue studies or careers in environmental science.
All applicants will be evaluated according to consistent and transparent criteria to ensure fairness and alignment with the organization’s educational mission.
